Padmashree Sardar Veerangouda Patil

Smt. Nagamma Patil

The first lady M.L.A. from Bombay-Karnataka, Smt. Nagamma Patil, and Padmashree Sardar Veerangouda Patil created MAHILA VIDYA PEETH in Hubli in 1934 under the name Harijan Balikashram. In Karnataka, Sardar Veeranagouda Patil was a seasoned figurehead for the freedom movement. He was a renowned Gandhian and constructive worker who contributed greatly to the cause of educating women folk and the freedom of war Harijans. His selfless service and sacrifice are commendable not only in the area of freedom struggle but also in the areas of uplifting Harijans and education.With an object of promoting the cause of education, he started his career as a Life Member of Karnataka Lingayat Education Society, Belgaum (K.L.E. Society) which is now one of the biggest educational organizations in Asia. He was one of the seven Founder Members of K.L.E. Society.

He joined the National Freedom Struggle in 1930 after Mahatma Gandhi called for it, voluntarily leaving the K. L. E. Society to keep it free of foreign rule. From 1930 through 1942, he took part in all independence struggles, suffering and making sacrifices. He spearheaded the famous “No Tax Campaign” of Hirekerur Taluka (Dist. Dharwad) in 1932, and the people of the area awarded him the title of “Sardar” of Karnataka. He went by the name “Sardar Veeranagouda” and was addressed by Mahatma Gandhi and other national figures.

He later received the “Padmashree” award from Dr. Babu Rajendra Prasad, the President of India, in recognition of his service and sacrifice.

the upliftment of Harijanas and opened a Harijana Hostel in Belgaum in 1928. The “Harijan Balikashram” was then established in Hubli in 1934, with the blessing of the Delhi-based All Indian Harijan Sevak Sangh.

In order to help the underprivileged and needy females, Padmashree Sardar Veeranagouda Patil and his wife Smt. Nagamma Patil built this institution along with a variety of educational institutes and dormitories. He had a strong commitment to the advancement of Harijans, which led to his selection as president of the Karnataka Harijan Provincial Board. In 1934, he established “Harijan Balikashram” in Hubli, the second institution of its sort in all of India, after Sabarmati Ashram, with the support of the Harijan Sevak Sangha, Delhi.

He made the decision to create this institution that provides education to women in general without making any distinctions based on religion, caste, or creed while simultaneously working for the general upliftment of Harijan females. As a result, organizations like the Basic Teachers’ Training College for Women and others were established. On December 25,1951, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru changed the name of this organization to Mahila Vidya Peeth and renamed the girls hostel for Harijans to Kasturba Balikashram in recognition of our government’s shift in vision and secular policies. In the future, Padmashree Sardar Veeranagouda Patil and his wife Smt. Nagamma founded other schools of higher learning for women.

During 1991-92, the Centenary Celebration of Sardar Veeranagouda Patil was observed under the leadership of the Hon’ble S. Nijalingappa, Ex-Chief Niinister of Karnataka & Former President of A.I.C.C. and Late Shri Venkatesh Magadi a Gandhian and a veteran Freedom Fighter and an Ex-Chairman of Karnataka Khadi Board. During the Centenary Celebrations the name of Mahila Vidya Peeth was re-named as ‘Sardar Veeranagouda Patil Mahila Vidya Peeth’ in Commemoration of the founder, by his holiness Shri. Shri. Shri. Jagadguru Tontadarya Dr. Siddalingeshwar Mahaswamiji of Gadag, a great saint of Karnataka.

This institution has a vast and valuable land measuring 10 Acres and 28 Guntas and out of which 6.28 Acres has been granted by Govt. Of Bombay and another 4 Acres by the Govt of Karnataka. The institution is extremely indebted to Hon’ble Shri Morarji Bhai Desai with whose help the land of 6 Acres and 28 Guntas was granted to this institution and who was the Chairman of Advisary Board of this organisation.

Later on, this organization was led under the ablest Chairmanship of Smt. Leelavati Magadi who was a Veteran Freedom Fighter & Ex-Minister of Karnataka State and promoter of Khadi and Village Industries, from 1969 to 1997 and Secretary Dr. Smt. Laxmibai Patil – an eminent lady Doctor and a social worker. After the death of Smt. Leelavati Magadi, Dr. Smt. Laxmibai Patil has been chosen as Chair Person.

The founder Trustee Smt. Nagamma Patil, even at her old age of 95 years, (Date of Birth 1612-1905) visiting the institution daily and guiding the management for its alround development.

During 1999 Smt. Nagamma Patil was awarded by Smt. Gangadevi Sarogi Foundation of Calcutta with a Trophy and Rs. One Lakh Cash award for her yeoman service.

The Founders and Trustees are ambitious to develop this organization into a DEEMED WOMENS’ UNIVERSITY on the lines of S.N.D.T. University established by Maharshi Kurvey as it was the wish of Late Padmashri Sardar Veeranagouda Patil.

Later on since 1969 this Organisation was led under the ablest Chairmanship of Smt. Leelavati Magadi who was a veteran freedom fighter and had seen problems of women. Smt. Leelavati Magadi who had worked as Ex Minister of Karnataka State and one of the exponents of promoters of Khadi and village Industries was taken the charge. During this period Mr. Venkatesh Magadi Social Worker & Ex-MLA under his leadership with assistance of Mr. P. V. Patil has built shopping complex costing about Rs. 50.00 lakhs. Mr. Venkatesh Magadi who has vision and thought to generate income to maintain the Institution, has built this complex for meeting the day today expenses of Institutions.

Mr. Venkatesh Magadi & Mr. P.V.Patil, worked hard to get the donations from the great/big-wigs people of Hubli and to collect advance payment from the people who want shops and show rooms & built huge shopping complex.

The Trust can never forget the service rendered by Late Shri A.V. Patil who was the elder son of Shri Sardar Veeranagouda Patil. Shri A.V. Patil served as Superintendent of Mahila Vidya Peeth, and later on worked as Trustee and Secretary from 1991-92 to 2005. His service accelerated the institution.

After the death of Smt. Leelalvati Magadi, Dr. Smt. Laxmibai Patil an eminent doctor and social worker who had been officiating as Secretary took charge of the whole Institution and she has been chosen the Chair person of Mahila Vidya Peeth, on 17.03.1997. Soon she shown no less courage in leading the Institution,. Moreover she had been serving as Doctor and tried diagnosing the Institutions daringly. The projects which remained pending she started to move on. She wants MVP to flourish, Dr. Laxmibai Patil, aspires not for short term fulfillments rather she longs for life long accomplishments. She geared to have a permanent source of Income as made it possible by planning for the construction of State Bank of India. It would be an insassant financial source.

Smt. Laxmibai Patil made all corner stones possible because a few people dare to dream. A dream, a work for Smt. laxmibai Patil as the she had many more worthy projects. The best examples are ITI College for Women. It is the rarest and the finest in Karnataka due to its splendid impart Training to women for self employment.

During 1994 Dr. Laxmibai ventured for another milestone a PU College for girls in Arts & Commerce streams. Recently Scince wing has also been added to it. She galvanized the education. A mesmerizing building has come-up to equip the students.

The Working Women’s Hostel is one of the finest creations in the twin cities, which was the need of the town. It occured to her mind in 2000 that she dreamt of a degree college. Now it is growing wide and beauty is drenched in. The building for it emerged at the cost of Rs.65,00,000/-out of wihich Rs. 50,00,000/- has been donated by Somani Trusts of Bombay. Her dream projects never stopped her from work. Dr. Laxmibai Patil catalyzed to have a Nursing Institution. She motivated for another landmark a green lush, sports ground, a mini stadium and Multi Gym for Women. Recently P.G. Courses have also been commenced as a stamp towards the proposed Deemed University, Dr. Laxmibai wants many wings to fly with.

About Secretary : Shri K T Patil

Since 1991 A Man Shri K T Patil  assigned responsibilities to nourishment of this Institute by Shri Venktesh Magadi. Then he was hip tied and kept ceaseless work day and night with co-ordination with Chairman Dr Laxmibai Patil.

K T Patil born on 21st June 1936 at Ballolli village bought up at Bijapur He completed BA (honors), MA in Kannada and B.Ed.

He served as Teacher at SS High school  Bijapur, 1965 to 1975 Head master at Mahila vidya peeth High school, honorary head master MVP Arts, Science and Home Science college, honorary head master in Mysore University for B.Ed.

Ever since the Management and the various Institutions run by it, now it runs a dozen educational Institutions successfully.  Providing Best Education at affordable cost blended with moral values like humanity, character and compassion so that the young women can face the challenges of life with courage and commitment and there after contribute to the Nation
